For the show, I decided on building a travel randonneur bike with some special features. As the bike is designed to breakdown into a regular suitcase for travel, I’ve added S&S couplers to the frame which allows the frame to break apart for easy packing. I’ve traveled with folding bikes and a Ritchey Break-Away, and while it’s fun to to have a bike with you when you travel, there are a couple issues that are always a pain: grease and having to protect your derailers. I’ve killed 2 birds with one stone by also building this bike to be equipped with a Carbon Belt Drive, 8 speed Afline internal hub, and Versa STI style shifters for the internal hub. I built bikes last year with the Versa/internal hub combo and with the Carbon Belt drive , but never both. With dynamo powered lights and rando front rack, it should be a fun go everywhere ride all day and into the night bike.
I finished the frameset this morning and dropped it off for powder coating this afternoon. I’m really looking forward to building it up an showing to everyone next weekend.
You can see this bike and all the other show bike Texas’ best framebuilders have put together for you next Saturday and Sunday (October 16-17) at the Texas Custom Bicycle Show here in Austin. The show is free to the public and will be 10AM- 4 PM at the Austin Music Hall the first day and 9 AM- 3 PM at PureAustin Quarry Lake including a cyclocross race on Day 2.
