Staying home this weekend

Posted Oct 16 2010 2:29pm
After three weekends in a row of camping and beautiful weather, I'm staying around home this weekend. We have a function to attend tonight. Otherwise the incredible weather continues and I might have headed out of town on the bike again. Instead I was able to get out on the Ellis. It's been neglected since I've been camping every weekend. It was a short, but great, 23 mile ride. A loop over into Wisconsin and back. I crossed over into the Dairy State on the Bong Bridge in the above picture.
Made a loop through Superior and south. Our fall colors are long gone. You can see all the bare trees above. However, the unusually high temperatures, 63F today, made up for the retreating feeling of summer and fall.
I came back into Minnesota on the Oliver Bridge. A double decker with train crossing on the upper level, everyone else on the lower level.

The St Louis River as it passes under the Oliver Bridge and on to Lake Superior.

Minutes after my ride, Jeff arrived at my house. I had offered the use of my shop tools and bike stand to assemble his recently powder coated Gary Fisher. It's been his winter bike since he started bike commuting all year a few years ago. He recently converted it to a single speed. It's looking really good. Looks a lot like my 1988 Specialized Rockhopper Comp.

My new winter bike is on hold for a few days. I had hoped to build it up this weekend. It's back at the bike shop. I have to get a straighter line for the belt drive between the front and rear sprockets. It looked straight, but when I got the belt on it wasn't. I guess it needs to be dead-on or the belt travels to the side of the sprocket. The bike shop is short help because the owner is still out of town. A few more days.

Here's me splitting the frame to pass the belt through. Pretty cool eh?
