Sites we like: Rides A Bike, Biking In Dallas, and The Urban Country

Posted Jan 25 2011 10:07am

I wanted to put in a plug for a few, newish bike blogs that I recently discovered that I think are worth reading if you enjoy Austin on Two Wheels.

Rides A Bike-

This is a Tumblr photo blog of movie stars from the golden age of cinema on bikes. From Clark Gable and James Dean to Marilyn Monroe and a Lt. Uhura, go-go boot clad Nichelle Nichols, these photos show riding a bike can be as glamorous and sexy as a car. I really think the bike industry needs to take note of these images. Think how many more bikes you’d sell and people would choose bikes to get places if you did an ad campaign with Kate Winslet or Johnny Depp helmetless and in regular clothes on bikes like this. I’m betting more than the typical ad featuring the lone cyclists clad in reflective gear riding the urban jungle .

If this were the way the bike industry sold cycling, how many more bikes would be on the road? Image courtesy of

Biking in Dallas-

This site is what Austin on Two Wheels would be like if I had stayed in Dallas after high school instead of moving to Austin. Article on bike rides and happenings in Dallas, reviews with a heavy emphasis on city bikes, and strong opinions where necessary. If you live in Big D, add this site to your daily visits.

The Urban Country-

I think this site is akin to a North American version of Copenhagenize . This site is not new, just new to me. Published since 2004, it is extremely well written by Toronto author James Schwartz and focuses on cycling as a solution to our dependent culture. Good reading.
