I also have a bad knee and biking is a great way to explore the trails that surround the bay area and you see some parts of the valley most do not.
I like to ride Monte Bello park just at the top of Page Mill road, you can climb Mt Black which is a great place to get your heart going and the views are great.

Step One of setting goals: Make it Meaningful.
The reason this goal is meaningful to me is that I need to find a new sport. I love love love to run trails. I love my soccer team. I love playing soccer. I love skiing-especially the bumps..Have you ever skied bumps in 2 feet of powder- oh my god it is heaven on earth. I am getting goose bumps just thinking about it. The thing is...I have worn out my knee. I don't know what is going on with it (neither does the surgeon). But the truth is, I'll likely not be able to run like I used to. I'll not be able to play soccer. I'll probably not get to ski the way I used to. So...I have to find a new sport. Sports are a way of life for me. It is how I have met my best friends. It is where I get my best ideas and inspiration. So, I've decided to devote myself to biking. Biking I can do. My knee likes it, I like it. I like to mt. bike, I have loved it. A friend of mine did the moab 24 hr race back in 98. I remember thinking then: Wow that is cool, I want to do that some day. So...my knee is helping me achieve that goal. This is why my 24 hour of Moab bike race is important to me.
