We had a morning temp of -26F (-32C) at the airport this morning. I estimate the temperature for most of my commute was more like -21F (-29C). The winds were light, so the windchill was somewhere in the -40's. I'm pretty sure this is a new personal record for a bicycle commute for me. I think I've ridden to work in the minus teens multiple times, but have never cracked the minus twenties before today.
This however is not the coldest temps I've been out in on a bicycle. The 2007 Arrowhead 135 I rode in had a temperature of -28 at the start. That was in International Falls, MN north of us. This morning they tied there all time lowest temperature at -46F. Yikes.
Having had that experience in 2007 and being able to stay plenty warm, I knew I could dress for today's weather. I'll admit, though, I was nervous about going out in these kind of temps. There is no room for error when venturing out in bitter cold like this. With all my cold weather experience, including winter camping, I'm pretty good at dressing for it. But even today I decided to second guess myself at the last minute and add one additional layer to my torso. It turned out to be one layer too many. I was a little too warm on the ride in.
The temperature on the way home was -2F (-19C). It felt so much warmer than the ride in the morning that I took a longer way home. I had the Pugsley today, so I took some snowmobile trails home.
I have more pictures to show, but blogger is telling me I've met my picture quota. So I guess I won't be posting any more pictures until I figure that out.
