it depends on what you mean by biking along the road... if you mean just cuzing down the block or riding with young kids then it won't matter much but if you are going to be riding for excercise or fitness there is a huge difference. MTN bike tires have MUCH more rolling resistance than road cycling tires, and are much more "rough" riding because of all of the little nubs for traction. They are usually about half of the pressure of road cycling tires. With road tires you can go farther, faster with less effort (read: more enjoyable) than you can on MTN bike tires. But if you're going thru sand, gravel and off road then the road tires would be worthless to you.
