Friday Film Fun: Bike Parking and Parking Yourself on the Toilet Bike

Posted Feb 18 2011 12:20pm

I’ve mentioned in previous posts that if Austin is really serious about getting to 5% of the population cycling for transportation by 2020, our roads are going to start looking very different as the City of Utrecht shows . 40,000 plus people on bikes on the road everyday is going to have a real impact on how the city feels.

In addition to making room on the road, there is the question of bike parking. You need a lot more bike parking facilities everywhere to accommodate that number of cyclist. Just check out this video of bike parking in Utrecht (starting at the 40 second mark and watch how long it goes), a city of 300,000 where 60% of the population rides a bike to work.

The good news is that bike parking do not take up nearly as much space or negatively effect the livability and environment of our communities as cars do . Heck, you can just lay down masking tape on a sidewalk like this Dutch video to make space for bikes.

On the lighter side, proving that good bike culture is not all about commuting and environmental guilt enjoy this Toilet Tricycle Race from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
