Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events. Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As always, if there is an event you know about that’s not on our calendar contact us, and we’ll add your event on and possibly add it to the weekly round up.
Thursday, April 2
Kenny Hill AutoWerks’ Driveway Criterium Races 4:30 PM, Community Rally, 5:30 PM, Races, The Driveway, 8400 Delwau Ln Weekly Thursday night road racing through October that takes place on the closed car-free driving course at the Driveway. Races include Cat 4/5 at 6:10, Cat 3/4 at 5:30, Pro/Cat 1/2/3 at 6:45 to choose from with a fourth Masters race (40 + years old) running from May 21- August 6 starting at 7:45. Open riding during Community Rally from 4:30- 5:30 PM. Races registration $20, Rally $10. $5 off with 8 oz can donated to Capital Area Food Bank. See our article about the series for more info.
Thursday Night Bike Polo 5:30 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave The Austin Bike Polo Club has added another weekly match to the regular Sunday afternoon affair. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any.
Urban Night Ride 7:30 PM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge A new ride from the Facebook group Social Cycling ATX. Meet at Pedestrian Bridge at 7:30p.m. leave at 8:00p.m. sharp. Bring your cameras & twitter phones and get some good sunset shots
Friday, April 3
Fabulous Fixed FirstFriday Alleycat Race 4:20 PM Registration opens. Race starts at 5 PM sharp at the State Capitol An informal in town race and scavenger hunt, alleycat races are a blast and not to be missed. The first friday of the month means Fabulous Fixed First Friday alleycat races. Bring $5, a bag and a fixed gear bike to race. Come and cheer even if you don’t plan to race so you can start your weekend right.
Saturday, April 4
10th Annual Pedal Power Wildflower Ride 8 AM, Lyndon B. Johnson State Park, Stonewall, TX Routes of 12, 23, 36 and 60 miles. $35 until 3/27/09, then $40. Ride the prettiest routes in the Texas Hill Country along quiet roads with an abundance of spring flowers. All proceeds benefit the Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center which provides services at no cost to physically and sexually abused children, and training to professionals and volunteers.
Mellow Johnny’s Scout-A-Ride: Mueller Meander 8: 30, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop, 400 Nueces St Saturday mornings spent exploring City of Austin bike routes finding new neighborhoods and ways to get around on your bike. This week’s theme is Mueller Meander. Cruise through the east side to check out the new Mueller development then visit Cherrywood before returning. These rides are meant for exploring so bring questions not your heart rate monitor.Come by early at 8:00 for coffee. Ride organizer: Eileen Schaubert at email@example.com or 512-426-4851.
Austin Flyers Rocky Hill Ranch Ride and Trek Demo 9 AM, Rocky Hill Ranch, Smithville, TX All Rider Levels Welcome! Join the Austin Flyers Cycling Club as they kick off the 2009 MTB ride schedule. Meet at Bicycle Sport Shop Central, 517 S Lamar Blvd at 8:00 am to carpool. Plan to ride approximately 12 -18 miles at intermediate / advanced pace then sit back and relax with food and drinks. $8.00 park entry fee.
Bicycle Sport Shop Single Track Stampede 9 AM, Reimers Ranch Park The Austin Ridge Riders Mountain Bike Club welcomes mountain bike racers to Milton Reimers Ranch Park. The trails are typical of hill country terrain with some climbing, some rocks for the experts, and some sweet twisty singletrack for the beginners. Event organizers have designed courses for different race categories to ensure a fun and challenging experience for all skill levels. Expo and pre-race course riding on Saturday, Cat 1, 2, 3 racing on Sunday. No pre-race riding on Sunday.
Austin Flyers Sunday Barton Creek Green Belt Mountain Bike Ride 9 AM, Bicycle Sports Shop Central, 517 S Lamar Blvd Meet at BSS Central at 8:45, roll out at 9:00. Austin Flyers will ride out to the Hill of Life and explore some additional trails. approximately 14-18 miles. With enough interest this could be a training-type ride and as usual this ride is aimed for advanced / intermediate riders with infrequent stops. After the ride meet at BSS for the Austin Flyers Club social, they’ll have yummy tacos and fresh juice.
Sexy Sunday BMX/Fixed Session and Footdown Competition 1 PM, Parmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Rd NEW LOCATION! Bring your BMX or fixed gear bike for a weekly, friendly tricks competition.
Capital City BMX Weekly Race Series 1 PM, Capital City BMX, 15010 FM Road 620 North The Capital City BMX opened in November 2008 and offers you a chance to learn and race BMX. BMX races are held every Sunday with rider check-in 1-2 PM. Cost $10/rider. (There is also practice time on Saturday’s. Check Capital City BMX for more info.)
Hardcourt Bike Polo 4 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave Join fellow bike polo enthusiasts as part of the newly formed Austin Bike Polo Club for a friendly Sunday match every week at 4pm at Bartholomew Park off East 51st. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any.
Monday, April 6
Austin Cycling Association Meeting 7 PM, LCRA Board Meeting Room, 3601 Lake Austin Blvd Monthly membership meeting of the Austin Cycling Association. This month’s program is “S24O” Bike Camping Tour Talk. If you’ve ever dreamed about doing a self-contained bike camping tour, this is your chance to learn more about how to do it, and to join a tour for an overnight campout. Former ACA presidents Steve Coyle and Scott Korcz will talk about the bike tour at the April meeting on April 6. They are planning an S24O (sub 24 hour overnight) tour to a local campground. In preparation for this tour, Steve and Scott will present hands-on information about the gear necessary to pack everything you need on your bike in order to camp overnight.
Tuesday, April 7
Ride and Imbibe Mountain Bike Ride 6 PM, Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park, 12138 N Lamar Blvd Started on the Bike Mojo forum, Ride and Imbibe to be held every Tuesday leaving and returning from the pool parking lot at Walnut Creek. All are welcome! The groups usually leave out around 6ish. Beer and snacks afterwards under the trees in the median of the parking lot.
Austin Yellow Bike Project collective meeting 7 PM, Bike Texas office, 1902 E 6th St This is the monthly meeting of the Austin Yellow Bike Project. YBP offers regular open shop hours to allow you to use shop space and tools to repair and maintain your bike. They just asks all those who use the shop to volunteer time to YBP equal to what they use for their own personal projects.
