Austin Bike Culture Calendar Events: 11/11- 11/17/10

Here’s a quick run down of recommended events for the coming week from our comprehensive calendar of all cycling events . Thanks to Jason at ATXBS for letting us know about some events we couldn’t find elsewhere. As always, if there is an event you know about that’s not on our calendar contact us, and we’ll add your event on and possibly add it to the weekly round up.

Thursday, November 11

Thursday Night Bike Polo
5:30 PM, Eastwoods Park, 3001 Harris Park Ave
The Austin Bike Polo Club’s weekday match. All bikes and skill levels are welcome and spare mallets and balls are available if you don’t have any. Check out our article on bike polo for more info.

Thursday Night Social Ride
7:00 PM, Festival Beach (North side of Lady Bird Lake, East of I-35)
Now winner of two 2010 Best of Austin Awards ! The large weekly ride from the Facebook group Social Cycling ATX that popularized social cycling in Austin. “This week we’ll do things like old times. We’re starting off with a good solid ride. We’ll stop at Zaragosa park for some more bike jousting, bike games and socializing, then take ourselves on another leisurely ride to Valhalla. They’ll be giving us a free keg of …beer to slake our thirsts and then $2 pints of anything they have on draft!” Meet up at 7:00, ride at 7:30.  Read our article on the weekly ride.

Friday, November 12

Red Licorice Events End of Year Party
6- 10 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Show, 400 Nueces St
You are cordially invited to attend the Red Licorice Events 3rd Annual End of the Year, Calendar Kick off and Appreciation Party. Its our party, but you get the gifts! There is so much going on, you won’t want to miss a minute of it: Music, Appetizers & Drinks, Huge Sale on all Merchandise, Prizes & Give-Aways, Blender Bike Races, Slideshow by Jake North, Announcing the Volunteer of the Year, Belleview Bike Give-Away from Mellow Johnny’s, Street Strider Give-Away from Street Strider, Announcing the Partner of the Year … and of course opening of Calendar of Events Discounted Registration on all RLE Events.

Saturday, November 13

2010 Tour das Hugel

7 AM, Under the Mopac bridge on Lady Bird Lake
The Tour das Hugel is a free annual 100 mile ride that covers Austin’s toughest hills, including 10,000 feet of climbing. The ride is “organized” at the most grass roots level with no sponsors and limited support so that riders are encouraged to support themselves. New to the das Hugel is some support from Nelo’s Cycles who will be staffing some rest stops.

Pedal For Puppies Ride
8:30 AM, Continental Automotive Group’s Austin Subaru, 200 W. Huntland Drive
Pedal For Puppies is a one-day cycling event that starts and ends at Austin Subaru. There will be one rest stop along the way a Jack and Adams Bicycles. There is a delicious post-ride meal after the event that is for the all participants, riders and volunteers. There is light entertainment at Austin Subaru for our smaller riders and those who are relaxing. There will be a bounce house, face painter, and family music to be enjoyed by all! *Main Attraction* – Austin Pets Alive! adoption day 9am to 1pm. All proceeds, donations, adoption fees generated during Pedal for Puppies will be donated to Austin Pets Alive! – Our goal is to generate enough funding over the next year to build the Behavioral Rehabilitation Center. Total=25km

Mellow Johnny’s Scout-A-Ride: Hill Of A Ride
NEW TIME: 9 AM, Mellow Johnny’s, 400 Nueces St
Saturday mornings spent exploring City of Austin bike routes finding new neighborhoods and ways to get around on your bike. This week’s theme: Hill Of A Ride. This 15 mile ride will take you through great west Austin neighborhood routes with wonderful views and a few awesome hills thrown in for fun! This no-drop, co-ed group ride is perfect for the cyclist new to riding or bike commuting, returning to the bike or just looking for a more casual ride. The routes are designed to help riders navigate the city bike routes and other safe bike commuting options. We average 12mph for distances between 15-25 miles. Come by at 8:30 for coffee. FrankenBike #64
10 AM- 4 PM, Freewheeling Bicycles, 2401 San Gabriel St.
Austin’s monthly bike parts swap is back. Need a saddle or set of pedals to finish off that project bike? Have a box of never used or lightly used bike parts in the garage your significant other wants you to get rid of? Frankenbike is your answer. Stop by for a bit or stay all afternoon to hawk you wares. As always, admission is free, recycling great stuff is priceless.

Sunday, November 14

Motherf@#$er 100 Invitational Bicycle Race
1 PM, Backyard of the 21st St. Coop, 707 W. 21st St.
“The leaves have begun to turn around the 21st St. Coop and that means once again the return of “Perilous Urban Single-Track” to the alleys and sidewalks of West Campus. Let me reassure you that all the stops are being pulled out for this race, the likes of which I cannot reveal until the day of competition is upon us. Yet, in the spirit of driving up expectations, I am compelled to disclose that we’re flying in our Master of Ceremonies from LA just to direct this race, and may I also disclose that there will be much beer and mud… Well, that about says it, riders and teams will be announced in the coming week. And remember that although this is an invitational race, spectator participation is mandatory.” $5 donation.

Monday, November 15

The 6:00 Social
6 PM, Mellow Johnny’s Bike Show, 400 Nueces St

Mellow Johnny’s has a new weekday ride. It’s the 6:00 Social. It’s not the “ladies” ride. It’s co-ed. Meet at Mellow Johnny’s on Monday evenings and leaving at 6p. The ride will be 30 miles for 2-2.5hrs at 13-16mph; through neighborhoods, official bike routes, crossing a couple of large roadways, and two short sections on access roads. Helmets and lights are required (it will be dark before we return).

Heavy Metal Fitness Ride hosted by Social Cycling ATX
7:30 PM, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge
The Heavy Metal Fitness Ride has returned! Hosted by Social Cycling ATX, this ride is a higher pace and more challenging than their Thursday Night Urban Ride. The ride is 20-30 miles and usually ends with free beer and a dip in the water. Meet up at 7 PM. Ride leaves at 7:30 sharp.

Tuesday, November 16

Dirt Derby
5:30 PM, Austin/Del Valle Motorcross Park, 15400 Pearce Ln, Del Valle, TX

Austin’s weekly cyclocross series returns for its fourth season at the the fully illuminated motocross course and surrounding fields at Austin/Del Valle Motorcross Park (ADVMX). There are A, B, beginners, women’s, and children’s races in cyclocross and short track mountain bike. New schedule: 6:15 PM Kids Race, 6:20 PM Beginner Race Intro Lap, 6:30 PM Beginner Race (20 min), 7:00 PM B Short Track MTB (25 min), Intermediate, Masters & Single Speed classes, 7:30 PM B Cyclocross (25 min), Intermediate, Masters & Single Speed classes, 8:05 PM Open Short Track / Cyclocross (30 min)$10, women, beginners and kids only $5. Second race same night $5. All types of bikes are welcome. There will also be a Two 7-Week Miniseries with more prizes.

Wednesday, November 17

Hump Day Ride hosted by Social Cycling ATX
Noon, Lamar Blvd Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge, Lady Bird Lake
The latest new ride from Social Cycling ATX. Social paced ride for the riders that can make it out during the work week. We will have a few stops one at a coffee shop and one for lunch. All levels are welcome. Share with your “funemployed” friends.
