ACA Hosted Ride Leader Training this Sunday, LOBV volunteering next 2 weeks
Posted Jan 03 2011 2:25pm
The Austin Cycling Association is having a training session this Sunday for those interested in leading hosted rides. The hosted rides are those outside of the classic Saturday and Sunday rides. They can be any day of the week and any kind of theme. ACA is looking to beef up their ride offering and will promote the ride through their site (and these rides end up on Austin on Two Wheels‘ calendar as well.)
Here’s the skinny:
Our training incorporates portions of the Traffic Skills 101 course, handling groups and minor mechanical issues, creating routes and maps, and submitting rides to the website. All we ask is that you have a desire to ride with other people and come with a ride idea in mind! We’ll take care of the rest. By the end of the training you’ll have your first ride posted.
We need slow riders, fast riders, suburban riders, downtown riders, weekend riders, weekday riders – that’s right, riders just like YOU.
Love the classic rides? Host a ride at a classic – all that means is that you post your preference on speed and distance so it’s an invite for others to meet up with you at the ride.
Want to create a themed ride? Awesome, we love those! Art rides, cupcake rides, symphony rides, what do you like to do on your bike?
Have to crank out some hill repeats? What do you know, we have other racers in the club! Get some motivation going and add 1 more climb.
For 2011, we want to expand on what we are calling ride “hubs”. We’ll match up several leaders to share a regular ride start. All take turns
leading so the ride happens regardless of individual schedule conflicts – think Saturday Scout-A-Route, the weekday Walnuts and soon to be resurrected Sunday Peddler ride.
Sunday January 9th
1902 E. 6th St (Blue and Yellow building at Chicon St.)
Class size is limited so email Eileen Schaubert if you are interested in participating or want to get on the waiting list for the next class.
Also coming up are a couple of volunteer days with the League of Bicycling Voters:
LOBV Volunteer Hours is happening again this week and next. I’ll have some tasks on-hand to work on, such as data entry, phone calls to current members, online research, and updating web content. Bring your laptop computer, if you’ve got one, as most tasks require the use of a computer. This will also be an opportunity for you to learn more about what unique, ongoing, volunteer opportunities are available that will have a direct impact on making Austin better for bicycling.
