Robinson Cano and Damaso Marte return from WBC nursing injuries

Posted Mar 14 2009 3:04pm

Joe Girardi always has been a big fan of the World Baseball Classic, but his affection for Bud Selig's international exhibition may have taken a bit of a hit Friday.

That's because Robinson Cano and Damaso Marte both came back from their stint with the Dominican Republic nursing minor injuries, postponing their return to the Yankees' lineup. Girardi replied, "Yes," when asked if this was a manager's worst nightmare when it came to the WBC.

"You go to those games and your intensity is really turned up a lot sooner than it would be normally," Girardi said. "Hopefully it's not much and hopefully they both bounce back fairly quickly, but it's not how you want them coming back."

Cano has tightness in his right shoulder, an issue he revealed he has been battling since the beginning of spring training. Cano said he feels it only when he throws and not when he swings, but the second baseman never mentioned the issue to the Yankees before departing for the WBC, most likely because he didn't want to be pulled from the event.

"I thought if I stretched, it would be all right," Cano said. "It's just a little tight. It's not bad. I was playing there."

Still, Cano admitted the issue "never went away" during his time as the Dominican's second baseman. He and Marte, who is battling soreness in his pectoral muscle area, will be examined Saturday by Dr. Chris Ahmad, the Yankees' team physician.

Girardi had planned to let Cano and Marte work out Friday and play Saturday in one of the Yanks' split-squad games.

Girardi had no idea Cano had been nursing an injury before the WBC.
