Pedro Martínez wants to pitch next season, and he wants to pitch for the Mets. But the chances of his returning diminished Monday when General Manager Omar Minaya all but ruled out re-signing Martínez.
Minaya suggested that the Mets would pursue him only if they failed to sign Derek Lowe, Oliver Pérez or Randy Wolf.
Despite Minaya’s insistence that he is not “too confident,” the Mets seem likely to sign Lowe or Pérez. The Braves appear to be the Mets’ only competition for Lowe, and even if Atlanta snares him, no suitors have yet to emerge for Pérez.
The Mets wanted to add at least two starters all along: a reliable No. 2 or No. 3 option and a veteran to compete for the No. 5 slot with the rookies Jon Niese and Bobby Parnell. Redding, the favorite to win that final spot, provided tangible evidence of the Mets’ waning interest in Martínez. Redding, who turns 31 next month, went 10-11 with a 4.95 earned run average for Washington in 2008. The New York Times
