San Francisco Carpal Tunnel Doctor comments on the Arm and Wrist Pain Epidemic with Young Bay Area Professionals:
I have been treating SF Bay AreaCarpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) victims for over 15 years now at my Financial District Back and Wrist Pain Center. Back in the Dot-Com days I was overwhelmed with young professionals with neck, arm, and hand pain, that were working 20 hour days at start-ups. I had to hire 5 doctors just to be able to keep up with it. When that blew up, things kind of mellowed out, as far as CTS goes. But, it seems like it has started to heat up again over the past year or so.
As the technology sector and our local economy has rebounded, I have noticed an increase in the amount of repetitive stress injuries (RSI), such as wrist pain and CTS, with the younger, hard driving urbanite. It just goes to show you, being young does not immunize you against the backlash of working too much, pushing too hard, or not keeping things in proper balance.
Those that are most prone are those that have hobbies like playing a musical instrument, or playing tennis, or even video games. Heck, if you work on the computer for 12 hours, and then go home and play video games, you just don't give the body enough time to rest and recover.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can get nasty and become a real problem. The best thing to do if you notice wrist pain, arm or hand pain, and especially night pain, is to see a back and wrist pain doctor immediately. Not just any doctor, but one that spends a good part of their day treating patients with neck, arm, and hand pain. Preferably without drugs or surgery. If these problems are handled right, they can be fixed in a short period of time and you can learn CTS exercises and ergonomics for the back and wrist, that will help prevent RSI in the future.
If you have CTS signs and symptoms, live in the SF Bay Area, and would like to find out if you are a candidate for care at my Financial District Back and Wrist Pain Center, you should see us ASAP.
