What is this Subluxation that Chiropractors treat?

I had an interesting conversation with my Chiropractic patient today in regards to treatment of his subluxations. He asked me if his subluxations will ever go away. In other words will there be a time when he won’t have to come and see me. I was cute and answered him by saying “sure, at the same point when you don’t have to go to the dentist any more, or don’t have to change the oil in your car or the filters in your furnace.” He laughed and got the point.
Life happens. You get in trouble with subluxations by lifting wrong, bending wrong, too much stress, exposure to toxins, poor diets, too much soda, smoking, the list goes on and on and on. All these activities will take a toll on your body and can affect your spine. When the spine is twisted, tilted or jammed it can irritate nerves and pain and symptoms occur. Chiropractors call these changes to the spine subluxations. And they are significant because if they are not address and corrected, damage to the nerves can occur and arthritis can build up as well over time.
In the case of my Chiropractic patient, his subluxations cause him mid back pain. And most of the time he is doing well but if he works in his yard hard doing a lot of lifting, he will feel some discomfort in that weaker area and sure enough his spine has slightly shifted and subluxations have occurred. What pleased me was that he understood that pain is not normal but a signal that something has changed and not for the good. So he quickly got in the office and we fixed the problem and saved him some significant pain and symptoms. Nerves that come out of that mid back area go to some important organs. If you go to my website at www.southingtonchiropractor.com, there is an interactive body there that will show you why subluxations in that area are so significant.
It always amuses me when I hear the statement that once you go to a Chiropractor, you always have to go to a Chiropractor. I don’t understand why that is a bad thing. Once you go to a dentist, if you want to keep your teeth, don’t you always have to go to the dentist? Once you change the oil in your car, if you want your car to keep running symptom free, don’t you always have to change your oil? Once your spine is corrected, is straight and flexible, don’t you want to keep it that way? It is always up to you, the patient. If you want to have dentures, don’t go to the dentist. If you want your engine to seize up, don’t change the oil. If you want to have stiffness, pain, arthritis etc, don’t go to the chiropractor. I don’t make my patients keep coming to me…they choose to be healthy and avoid problems. They have learned how good it feels to be subluxation free. I have many former patients that don’t come back. It is their body and their life. I will be here to help them when their problem returns.
If you see a Chiropractor, great. Keep seeing them as you will be the healthiest you can be. If you have never seen a Chiropractor, try it out. It is safe, effective and inexpensive. And it feels really good. I am sure that most of us in this area would be happy to talk to you and see if you are a good candidate for chiropractic care.
