What is pain between the buttocks cause from and what can we do relieve the pain?

My husband has been suffering from pain between his  buttocks (right in the center of the buttocks...he says in the crack)  He can barely walk.  As long as he doesn't move he is fine.  He cannot bend or get out of a chair.  What could this be?  He said it started bothering him when he woke up this morning.
