What can I do to help my chronic back and neck pain? Please help!

Posted by Alexandra

I suffer from chronic back and neck pain. I am female, 20 years old, exercise regularly and have no other problems than a slight anxiety problem, which I manage. Often, I feel pain all the way up my body on one side. My lower back/tailbone cracks strangely, and my upper back is filled with 'knots.' Sometimes I get migraines from all of the tension in my back and neck. I have gone to several chiropractors and masseuses, but nothing has helped. I've also worked on having good posture most of the time. Please let me know if there is any particular exercise, diagnosis, or anything I can do to help this problem. It affects my life every day. Thank you! -Alexandra Thompson

Dear Alexandra- having a chronic back and neck pain problem can be pretty stressful and affect your activities of daily living.

Have you tried acupuncture treatment? This treatment can be very powerful and treat many of the things that you have talked about.

It sounds like you also have a lot of muscle spasms and trigger points. Your write that you have tried massage in the past. Keep in mind that there are many different kinds of massage therapy- you want to be able to tell the practitioner where your trigger points are. It is probably best to do this in conjuction with a chiropractor.

Also, there are treatments such as cold laser, modalities such as ice/heat/estim that also may be beneficial. Doing neck stretches or yoga may also help.

Have you had an x-ray, MRI, blood work  that would better explain why you are having this chronic pain? - NJ
