If Back Pain Patients were to make only one change in their lifestyle that would have the greatest impact on their low back pain, it would have to be losing weight, and keeping it off
It is fairly common for low back pain sufferers to be overweight. Heck, two thirds of the population is overweight. And, 80% of the population will have severe back pain at some point in their lives. A good portion of these people have ongoing low back pain (chronic). Many of the overweight patients with low back pain could eliminate their pain if they were to just lose weight. I see it in my practice over and over again. Sure, there are plenty of chronic low back pain victims that do not have a weight problem, but there are way more that do.
So, if you REALLY want to get rid of your low back pain and you weigh too much, you should get rid of the extra baggage. Yes, there is still a chance you could lose the weight and the pain is still there. But, if done in conjunction with chiropractic care, exercise, therapy, and maybe decompression, all you will be doing is increasing the odds of a favorable outcome. You will look and feel much better also.
The diet I recommend to my patients is a plant based diet. You don't have to count calories, you can eat as much as you want (because you are eating the right foods), and you never go hungry. This is the diet we were designed to eat. When you eat like this the fat will simply melt off of you. The typical American diet, and being overweight is pro-inflammatory. A plant based diet is anti-inflammatory. This helps the spine to heal and recover from chronic, degenerative, inflammatory conditions. This diet is also very good for your overall health and well being. It is common knowledge that most of the major diseases and cancers (heart, prostate, colon, rectal) are the direct result of poor nutrition.
So, if you want to lose weight, reduce the odds of sickness and disease, and help your back pain, a plant based diet is the way to go. A few weeks ago I wrote about taking theVegPledge. This is for folks that know they need to make a change with the way they eat but they don't know where to start. Check it out. You will be glad you did.
