
This could be a muscle spasm of the cervical paraspinals and upper trapezius. Tender trigger points can send shooting pains into the shoulder. Have you tried to stretch the trapezius muscle? Using a tens unit with heat therapy may also be benefical for you.
You may also want to get a cervical mri to see if there is disc involvement. A cervical radiculopathy can cause radiating pain into the extremity. In addition you may experience weakness, changes in sensation (numbness and tingling), neck pain and changes/absence of reflexes. - NJ
