The Expert Patients Programme is an NHS initiative that was launched in 2002 to help patients with chronic conditions to take control of their lives by increasing their confidence, improving their quality of life and managing their condition.
The programme runs a training course that teaches people how to manage their conditions by using five core skills. These are problem solving, decision making, making the best use of resources, developing effective partnerships with healthcare providers and taking appropriate action.
The programme which has been very successful provides free courses for people with a chronic condition like arthritis, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, MS, and others to help them manage their condition on a daily basis.
I went on this course the year it was launched and it definitely helped me plan my route to take the appropriate action to control my pain. Unfortunately due to my condition at that time I was unable to finish the course as I needed treatment. Fortunately I was given a large book which has the full course inside it so I could still read and learn about it.
There are a number of free treatments and help for people in chronic pain available in the NHS and I think patients are mad if they don't at least 'try' them as you just never know, one might work wonders for you.
