Sitting can increase low back pain.

Posted Aug 13 2010 5:04am

I was talking with a returning patient today in regards to why their low back pain returned. We reviewed his life style and noted the fact that he sits for long periods because he travels quite a bit either flying or driving. I explained to him what happens when a person sits for a long time.

Sitting increases low back pain 5 times more than standing does. Sitting will shorted some muscles especially the psoas which is attached to the spine in the front of the vertebra. It weakens the postural muscles because they are not used as they should be. Couple that with the constant low-level vibration present in a car or airplane and you can begin to see why the spine gets out of alignment and the joints get irritated.

Changing your position frequently, stretching, walking at a rest stop or up and down the plane aisle will help to prevent pain and Chiropractic care is necessary to restore the alignment.

I encouraged him to keep his regular appointments to prevent the problem from returning. It is easier to prevent pain than to fix it.  I suggested he visit our website at www.southingtonchiropractor.com for more ideas.
