Repetitive stress in golf: Why does my back hurt

Posted Apr 15 2011 8:27am

Golf is a very repetitive sport. Most golfer will do some routine of stretching to warm up before they begin but usually never while playing. This can be a problem because twisting repetitively can cause back pain.

To analyse the repetitive stress in golf, consider the 18 handicap playing on a par 72 course. During the game he has swung 90 times. But that doesn’t consider the warm up before the game began and the pre-shot routine swings. More that likely this golfer has swung around 200 times in the same direction.

To counter the repetitive stress in golf, stretch between every one-to-two holes. And during the game mirror your swing in the opposite direction. This will allow you to complete your game with less back pain and stiffness and hopefully a better score.
