I've been carrying on my search for celebrities with Fibromyalgia or one of the many other Syndromes which have the same pain and Paula Abdul's name linked me to a website called FOR GRACE www.forgrace.org which was founded in 2002. It is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring ethical and equal treatment of women in pain and was inspired by the true-life story of founder and spokesperson Cynthia Toussaint. A former ballerina, Ms Toussaint had suffered after a ballet injury with, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (yes ! another Syndrome) and now Fibromyalgia.
It believes in empowering women to be better consumers for their pain management care and says that increased medical research shows differences in how men and women experience pain. According to a landmark study published in the Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics, women's pain reports are taken less seriously than men's and women receive less aggressive treatment for their pain (nothing new their then!).
It has a leadership of women assembled by FOR GRACE which comprises of national pain experts who can speak to media and policy makers about the gender disparity issue from a personal, clinical and research perspective and states "Doctors must understand that women's pain is tactile, not psychological" ( so, we are not on our own here girls).
This site is well worth a visit with a section with 101 ideas to empower women in pain to survive and thrive!! A couple I found interesting were number 18 - Keep a gratitude/affirmation log (write down three things your grateful for each day ! and number 43 - Have realistic expectations about therapies (ie have you given your physical therapy regime enough time to help?)
It has numerous famous quotations popping up one of which I thought was so true "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent" - Eleanor Roosevelt.
I have signed up for the email but haven't received it yet but will write a blog on it as and when. After reading it through I then decided to see what would come up if I tapped into Google "Pain in women " 95,600,000 sites came up !!!!!!!!
