Massage is the practice of applying structured or unstructured pressure, tension, motion, or vibration — manually or with mechanical aids — to the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, joints and lymphatic vessels, to achieve a beneficial response. Massage Therapy is performed primarily by a professional Massage Therapist but is often used as a form of therapy by other Healthcare practicioners such as Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physical Therapists.
Massage can be applied to parts of the body or successively to the whole body, to aid the process of injury healing, relieve psychological stress, manage pain and improve circulation. Where massage is used for its physiological, mental, and mechanical benefits, it may be termed “therapeutic massage”. For example, headaches account for more than 10 million visits to doctors each year, according to the National Headache Foundation. Neck aches frequently lead to headaches or combine with them. Tense muscles press against the blood vessels and nerves in the head and neck and create pain.
Tension headaches can feel as though there is a tight band around your head. By massaging the band, you can often relieve the muscle spasms that produce the pain. “The muscles in your head [sometimes neck and shoulders, too] are in spasm during a headache,” explains Alexander Mauskop, M.D., professor of clinical neurology at SUNY-Health Science Center of Brooklyn and director of the New York Headache Center. “But we don’t know if this is the main cause, or if it’s the result of something that happens in the brain to start the spasm.” From a chiropractic perspective, pressure or pinching of the nerves which exit the spine at the base of the head, is a frequent cause of headaches.
There are a variety of ways to deal with head and neck pain. Besides chiropractic care which is very safe and effective for headache treatment, adjusting your body position, exercising, relaxing in a warm bath, stretching, watching your eating habits, and getting a massage can also help.
A licensed massage therapist is trained in a variety of techniques to relax muscles not only in the neck and head for headaches but for pain in any part of the body. Shiatsu, Swedish, Hot Stone etc are all ways of breaking up muscle tightness and helping a person to relax. Massage is a great adjunct to what I do as it will help retrain the muscles which have shortened or are in spasm due to injury either acute or chronic.
