MAGNETS FOR PAIN - IS IT ALL JUST A SCAM?

Posted Aug 04 2010 12:15pm

As I'm sure many of you know or may even use magnets for pain relief as they have been used for health purpose for centuries, in fact some people swear by them.

Practitioners of magnetic therapy believe that by placing a magnet near to an affected site, the blood flow will increase which will then aid healing.

You can buy them in patches, disks, shoe insoles, bracelets, and mattress pads.

Although they are considered quite safe, people with medical devices like pacemakers or defibrillators, cannot use them as they may interfere with their devices.

Scientific studies of magnets for pain relief have mixed results. Evidence produced so far says there is no convincing substantial evidence to support the claims that magnets can actually relieve pain of any type.

Several clinical trials that have tested the use of magnets against a placebo showed that those with the magnets had no more positive effects than those with the placebo.

More research on magnets for pain is needed before reaching any firm conclusion.
