One of the most common muscles to stretch is your Erector Spinae muscle group. These are the muscles that run either side of your spine and help maintain your posture. They are the main muscle you use as you bend and then stand up straight again. Hence used often and commonly tight.
Please remember, lower back stretches are important but they are only part of a regime you need to sue for back pain relief. Back pain is caused by tight and weak muscles, joints disruption and pelvic imbalance. There are other factors as well that need correcting that range from your stress levels to general health.
Stretches are one important part though – knowing what to stretch is important, knowing how to stretch is essential, and knowing when to stretch is imperative. But onto stretching your Erector Spinae.
The best way to stretch these is to lie on your back. Then raise one knee towards your chest until you feel a pulling sensation in your lower back muscles. Stretch using the PNF stretch method and then repeat for the opposite side. Finally finishing by bringing both knees to your chest.
This stretch needs to be performed before you do any abdominal muscle work as it works opposite to the abdominal muscle group. If you fail to stretch the lower back muscles, abdominal exercises will be in vain.
