This can often happen.  As the disc degenerates it flattens, sort of like a flat tire.  It flattens and bulges usually.  So now the spacer in between your vertebrae is less.  That disc, or spacer, if you will, allows a space behind the spinal bones to stay open and clear for the nerve to exit.  The less room there is, the easier it is for pressure to acumulate on the nerve.  Depending on the neve fiber or fibers you hit, you can get pain, numbness, back pain, butt pain, etc..
