Massage is really great, too. And as long as it's been a few days since the injury or inciting incident, heat can be really relaxing. I like Salonpas and Thermacare wraps. There are quite a few of these portable heating products available at the grocery or drug store.

Hi Anne, Thanks for your comment. Heat is another great modality - good for muscle spasms, & sprain/strains. I prefer to use ice first in most cases, especially when the condition is acute. This decreases inflammation in the area and decreases pain as well.
Heat Packs are very simple to use and can be easily put into the microwave to be heated up for 30 seconds. It is also important to wrap the heat pack in a towel before placing on your neck or lower back area. - NJ

Muscle spasm or muscle tension in the neck or in the lower back? One way to treat this simply at home is to use a combination of ice and Biofreeze, a natural pain relieving Gel. A muslce spasm often feels like a tightness and sometimes it can be painful. I originally wrote this article on ehow.com and now i want to share it on my blog as well. In this particular blog I am talkinga about treating a muscle spasm in the neck region specifically. I have also given you ideas for your lower back region as well. Here is what you will need:
Step by Step Instructions for treating your muscle spasm:
It is a good idea to have someone else do this for you, but this is not always possible.BioFreeze Natural Pain Relieving Gelis odorless, and greaseless but you don't want your fingers tingling afterwards. Wearing a glove will also save you a step from having to wash your hands (you can concentrate fully on your neck pain or lower back pain)
Also, It is a good idea to keep your ice pack in a seperate plastic bag so that it does not pick up the freezer odors. You want to get a6 x 20 ice packbecause this will fit nicely around your neck or a10 x 12 ice packfor your lower back region.
