A blog reader just sent me this question "Would a cervical pillow help my carpal tunnel symptoms?".
What a great question...and the answer is YES...here's how:
The nerves that exit from in between the bones in the neck (cervical spine) travel down the arm and into the hands. Pressure on these nerves in the neck can cause the same symptoms in the hand as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
Nerve pressure in the neck can happen from bones that are out of alignment (vertebral subluxations) and the cervical muscle spasms that are associated with them. The tight muscles, inflamed ligaments and tendons, and spinal degeneration can offend and irritate the spinal nerve roots (as they exit the cervical spine) causing carpal tunnel symptoms.
A good neck pillow can help to restore and maintain proper cervical spinal alignment.
Sure, sometimes...depending on the severity of your hand pain or CTS symptoms, you may need more than a good neck pillow...but the time for a good neck pillow is always NOW!
I have had patients tell me that the hand pain they were experiencing went away overnight because of the new neck pillow...amazing Huh...But true.
Anyway...if you are experiencing hand pain or any of the other symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, such as numbness, tingling, weakness of grip, swelling, or night pain...you owe it to yourself to get a good neck pillow ASAP.
I recommend going to a sleep shop where they sell a variety of neck pillows so you can try them out and get the right fit.
I also recommend a visit to a chiropractor that has experience treating CTS and it's related disorders because you might need more than just a new neck pillow.
