Herniated Disc Treatment Options

San Francisco Herniated Disc Doctor Comments:

Back surgery is not always necessary
We have been providing Herniated Disc Treatment in San Francisco for 18 years.

According to statistics, about 10% of all herniated disc patients end up eventually requiring surgery. That's a lot of back surgery.

What happens with the other 90% of herniated disc patients?

Well...about 60% of all herniated disc patients recover after about 6 months with conventional treatments such as chiropractic, physical therapy, exercise, and medical care.

Some get better from doing nothing. I don't recommend this as you may feel better, but really have underlying problems that you end up having to deal with down the road when you least expect it.

What about the other 20%...what happens to them?

These patients end up having chronic back pain or chronic neck pain that they manage on an ongoing basis. Chronic pain is pain that persists for over 90 days.

These statistic are always changing and there is a lot of overlap.

At Executive Express Chiropractic we help hundreds of new cases of cervical and lumbar disc herniations every year. We use a combination of chiropractic, Active Release Technique (ART), deep tissue laser therapy , and nonsurgical spinal decompression .

I like to think we help prevent quite a few back surgeries each year.

In far as I know, only a few of our herniated disc patients last year ended up having surgery.

Time is on your side when you have a herniated disc, so in my opinion there is no reason to rush into surgery unless it is some sort of medical emergency.

Chiropractic care and nonsurgical spinal decompression are a very potent combination for herniated disc treatment. Spinal decompression as a stand alone treatment works very well also, as some patients are unable to handle chiropractic, or have already tried it.

In any case, there are treatment options for herniated discs other than surgery. Heck, you can always have back surgery if all else fails and you and your doctor feel it is the best option.

My recommendation: If you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc, find a chiropractor that has a spinal decompression machine and find out if you are a good candidate for treatment.

If you live or work near the San Francisco Financial District you can contact Executive Express Chiropractic at 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary spinal decompression consultation. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center where we are located. We are also open on Saturdays 9-1pm.

If you do not live in the SF Bay Area, I can recommend the following doctors:

Newport Beach Chiropractor Dr. Nona Djavid

Denver Chiropractor Ron Spallone

New York City Chiropractor Steven Shoshany
