Eliminating Back Pains when Gardening

Posted Jan 22 2011 4:35am

Gardening may seem to be your favorite hobby since it is good both as relaxation and exercise. However, planting may cause back pains so it is important to know some tips to avoid back pains when doing your favorite gardening.

Instead of just bending over when planting seeds or plants in your garden, you should kneel and just place old pieces of foam, cloth, or kneeler to cushion and protect your
knees from the hard solid ground. If you are about to plant many plants, stand up and do some back stretching every 15 to30 minutes. If you will use pots or containers for planting, place them on a worktop level and just be careful when putting down because they are heavy and can damage your back also. The main consideration when
protecting the spine when gardening is to plan how you will plant first before taking action.

Plan your garden well. Place low maintenance plants in areas where you are having a hard time getting through. Just like when planting, kneel also when weeding and try to do a regular weeding so that you’ll only spend little time in kneeling when weeding.

The working surface must be of right elbow level height. Do not lift heavy objects and just buy garden products in small bags. When shifting things, use wheelbarrow and just take small loads even though you are adding some trips.

Next is to vary your tasks every now and then. Any work performed for a long time can leads to poor posture and eventually put a lot of strain on the back causing back pains. So, you should learn how to swap tasks. For example, if you are going to weed
in an hour then you should swap tasks by bending over and then switching to pruning that will require another position like standing.

Lastly, walk back and forth carefully. Also, do not try to finish all the tasks in your garden at once. Schedule what you are going to do for the rest of the week. In this way, you will not stress your back by overdoing your garden.
