According to recent research news in the BackCare News Magazine, the effects of backpacks on the lumbar spines of children have come up for debate again. A study published in the Journal Spine seems to think that children's backs are adversely affected by the increasing weights they carry in large heavy backpacks.
Using MRI scans the researchers looked at the lumbar spines of children when carrying backpacks and different weights. They found that increased backpack weight significantly compressed the lumbar discs and subsequently increased back pain.
The study concluded that backpack loads were responsible for a significant amount of back pain in children.
