Doctors at Wockhardt Hospitals,Hyderabad performed a deformity correction through Vertebral Column Manipulation (VCM) technique on a 14-year-old girl suffering from Scoliosis.
Scoliosis is a medical condition in which the person's spine has an abnormal lateral curvature . The spine is curved from side to side,or even be rotated.Scoliotic curves greater than 10° affect 2-3% of the population of the United States.
Renowned orthopedic spine surgeon, Dr. V. Surya Prakash Rao with a team of doctors at Kamineni Wockhardt Hospitals has successfully performed a revolutionary deformity correction through Vertebral Column Manipulation (VCM) technique in Hyderabad. The advanced technique of scoliosis correction was performed for the first time in Andhra Pradesh on 14 yr old Shubha ( Name Changed).
14 year Shubhawas detected with a deformity in spine called scoliosis, which, with a passage of time would have led to impaired pulmonary function or probable morbidity. With VCM technique for scoliosis, Shubha now has near 100% correction and enjoy better quality of life.
Dr. V. Surya Prakash Rao, Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, Kamineni Wockhardt Hospital and a member of Scoliosis Research Society, explained: “Many children suffer from scoliosis of the spine, and their condition worsens because of delay in providing medical care. In the case of Shubha, due to the progressive nature of condition, the spine would bend in the thoracic region, the thoracic cage would be affected and she could have developed respiratory problems. With VCM technique, an advancing of the Scoliosis can be prevented. This is the only technique where we can possibly achieve complete scoliosis correction along with rib hump correction without Thoracoplasty, which is a very morbid and painful procedure.”
The term deformity is used to describe any variation in the natural shape. One form of spinal deformity, scoliosis, involves a lateral, or side-to-side, curvature of the spine. The vertebrae rotate along with the spine as a consequence of a scoliotic curve. Depending on the severity of the curve, a scoliotic spine may create asymmetries in the shoulders, thoracic spine, and pelvis, leading to an imbalance of the trunk and significant disfigurement. Scoliosis is a condition that affects the spines of many children, teenagers and adults. It may have adverse effects on patient appearance and on the chest organs. Scoliosis can also lead to impaired pulmonary function and the possible removal of ribs for rib hump correction.
The CD HORIZON LEGACY Vertebral Column Manipulation (VCM) offers surgeons an advanced means of achieving controlled curvature correction, which can lead to better outcomes for scoliosis patients. It allows an easy and direct manipulation of the vertebra & correction of the axial rotation.
