CONFUSING DIAGNOSIS on IBS, IBD, Fibromyalgia and ARTHRITIS

Posted May 04 2010 1:32pm

In the Daily Mail today in the Good Health Section it was quite a change to not find yet another article on how to beat back pain!!:zz:

However, one article which did catch my eye was in the question and answer section.

The question to the Doctor was “could there be any connection with IBS and arthritis”, as the patient said “every time she had an attack of IBS, her arthritis went worse”?

The Doctors reply was that the symptoms could be a sign of “inflammatory bowel disease” a condition which is linked to arthritis and later in the article he states it could also be Fibromyalgia (another condition which has had links to arthritis).

Yours truly and my daughter both suffer from IBS so it was of interest to me about his suggestion.

The Doctor said that when you arrive to see your Doctor about your abdominal pain, bloating etc, the chances are you will not have anything else fully investigated which can mean that thousands of patients labelled as “IBS, Irritable Bowel Disease” sufferers could actually be suffering from “IBD, Inflammatory Bowel Disease”.

Confused?:**:

IBS Syndrome – a syndrome means a group of symptoms, including abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea/and or constipation and weight loss and …....

IBD – two diseases, ulcerative colitis and Chron's disease, diseases if the intestinal tract, symptoms include abdominal pain, weight loss, diarrhea, fever and ….......

FMS Syndrome – a group of symptoms which include pain, fatigue, muscle stiffness, headache, insomnia, IBS, and ….....

Arthritis – joint inflammation, a group of 100 rheumatic diseases and other conditions, causing pain, stiffness and swelling of joints, tenderness, inflammation, loss of flexibility, weight loss, extreme fatigue, fever and ….....

Most of these have more symptoms which confused me slightly in that Syndrome means of group of symptoms and yet its only IBS and FMS that are classed as “syndromes”.

Also, some of these can be aggravated by stress and bad sleep and most can be affected by our Immune System not working properly which affects one's ability to fight disease and sickness.

After one of my first epidural injections my consultant at that time asked me to keep a diary for him and put down how my pain was each day and if, when and where it came from.

After reading my diary that he diagnosed me with also suffering from Fibromyalgia which was a disease I had never, ever heard of before but it did account for lots of other strange pains I had been suffering from, so my advice to anyone seeing a doctor or specialist is to keep a diary of all your symptoms to help the doctor or consultant with their diagnosis.
