Some people have pain in the neck that just wont go away...no matter what they do. Sure...chiropractic care, massage, or exercise will make it feel better...but it's only temporary. We call this condition chronic neck pain.
At my San Francisco back, neck, and wrist pain center...we always consider chiropractic care first...unless the patient has already tried it unsuccessfully. But even then...maybe a different, more comprehensive approach will work...an approach that actually changes the position of the cervical spine, so it is better able to support the weight of the skull against gravity.
A common problem today is forward head posture (FHP)...or anterior weight bearing of the skull. Some of this can be hereditary...but mostly it's acquired...meaning it's an adaptation to external circumstances...like sitting at a desk for 20 years in school. And sitting at a desk in front of a computer all day at work. Or even wearing a knapsack...which causes the neck and head to move forward to counter balance.
If a chiropractor treats chronic neck pain without addressing the forward head posture, there is a chance the pain will persist, or only improve slightly.
There are several chiropractic techniques, including Biophysics and Pettibon methods that seek to restore FHP as a basic foundation of the treatment. I incorporate Biophysics into my treatment protocols because it just makes sense. Yes, often times the treatment plans are a little longer than most...but the results are longer lasting...often permanent if maintained properly.
Great Article Dr. Davis. Chiropractic Biophysics is one great way to treat forward head posture. One can also do traction at home as well as
neck exercises, including
cervical retraction exercises. - NJ
