Chronic Back Pain and Chronic Fatigue. One Thing Leads To Another

Posted Jun 02 2009 4:34pm

San Francisco Disc Pain Center Comments On The Connection Between Chronic Back Pain and Chronic Fatigue:

Experts say over 90% of the nervous systems (brain, spinal cord, and nerves) activity goes towards maintaining the body upright in it's gravitational field.  This is under normal circumstances. Normal circumstances meaning the spine is in it's proper position and there are no abnormal stresses on the nervous system from misaligned vertebrae, disk herniations, spinal stenosis, or other means. When the spine (which houses and protects the brain & spinal cord) is out of alignment ( sublimation), it causes the nervous system to devote even more of it's energy to maintain the body upright in it's gravitational field, which depletes energy capacity. There is only so much energy to work with. For example, if you examine someone with a forward head posture (FHP), the neck muscles will be in a constant state of spasm because they are having to work much harder than they should to keep the head balanced over the body. It's actually a mathematical equation, whereby the cervical spinal muscles have to exert a force that is equal to the anterior weight bearing of the skull (FHP). It can be measured using a device called a surface EMG, which measures abnormal electrical activity in muscles. Anyway, enough of that mumbo-jumbo. The bottom line is that this requires extra energy which can deplete the bodies energy tank and pre-dispose you to chronic fatigue. When the body uses energy supplies inefficiently it can also weaken the immune system which can lean to colds, flues, and all sorts of other problems. So, what is the solution ? The solution is to work to move the spine back into a more normal position. There are chiropractic techniques such as Biophysics and Pettibon that base their entire  treatment protocol on spinal correction and remodeling. We incorporate both techniques into our treatment regimen. The first thing you should do is have some spinal x-rays (weight bearing) and a complete exam. Then, your doctor can make recommendations for your specific case. If you are a patient of mine or live in the SF Bay Area, you are welcome to come to our clinic for a complimentary consultation to see if this makes sense for you. We can also show you before and after x-rays at this time so you can see first hand the kind of changes that are possible. Some of our spinal decompression disc herniation patients do not qualify for this kind of treatment as it would be too stressful because the spine has already degenerated too much. But, some of them may be able to handle it after the decompression therapy and rehabilitation because the spine is stronger and better able to handle external stresses. If you would like to find out more, please call and ask for Dr. Davis at 415-392-2225.
