Chiropractic and Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI)

Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI) or Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTD's) are very common with office workers...especially in the San Francisco Financial District.

According to Harvard (University) RSI Action, Repetitive Stress Injuries are defined as follows:

RSI stands for Repetitive Strain Injury. It includes a whole spectrum of conditions, from tendonitis of the hand or wrist to carpal tunnel syndrome to cubital tunnel syndrome. Basically, if your hands or wrists hurt or go numb or tingle, that may be RSI. If these symptoms are associated with repetitive tasks, such as typing at a computer, it is almost certainly RSI. (Note that such symptoms do sometimes go away within a few minutes, hours, days, or weeks.) Other symptoms include losing strength or coordination in your hands, or perhaps dropping things.

Not everyone experiences all symptoms, and sometimes your symptoms may not occur until several hours or even days after the activity which causes them. (Have you ever hiked a long way and not been really sore until the next day or even two days later?) Some people, especially at UHS, call RSIs Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs); it's the same thing.

At Executive Express Chiropractic (formerly Front Street Chiropractic), we have been helping employers prevent and treat work related RSI for almost 20 years. What's interesting is that you can have say 200 employees performing the same tasks, but only a handful suffer repetitive stress injuries...Why?

Well, a persons ability to sit for long periods (often without adequate rest) while performing repetitive motions is directly proportional to their over-all physical condition, posture, spinal alignment, stress levels, and lifestyle choices (including sleep patterns and food choices). At least from the inside out.

There are external factors as well, such as office chair type, desk, computer/desk set-up, monitor height, rest periods, and work stress.

Heck, our body's simply were not designed to be sitting at a desk all day performing repetitive movements. Especially under artificial light, eating artificial food, while dealing with stress.

The good news is...not only can chiropractic care help to prevent RSI by helping the spine and extremities stay in proper alignment, chiropractic is probably the best form of treatment for RSI.

A chiropractor that treats cumulative trauma disorders (CTD's) or RSI, will incorporate lots of exercises and ergonomic education as well as chiropractic treatment so that the problem does not reoccur.
