Can a nerve become infected through unclean needles used in acupuncture?

I was doing my own acupuncture and have had terrible nerve pain in my neck for 3 months now.  Could I have caused an infection in my nerves?  How can I get rid of this infection?  Can proper acupuncture get rid of pinched nerve pain.  The MD shoulder surgeon says it is a pinched nerve causing trapezius spasm.
