BUNION AND BACK PAIN...

Posted Sep 14 2010 5:16am

A bunion is a painful bony swelling at the base of the big toe and often the big toe will look as if it is bent towards the other toes or even lie across them.

Causes of bunions can be from wearing high heels, age can also increase the likelihood of developing bunions as the ligaments loose strength with age and it can also be hereditary in nature, but can also be associated with diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Women are far more likely to develop it than men (just by way of a change!) and it is one of the most common deformities of the forefoot.

Another way this can develop is a change in your gait to compensate for the pain in your bunion or your back pain!

This morning my GP has just diagnosed me with having a bunion on my right foot due to my gait change which they are certain is due to my back pain and it looks like I have another one starting on the other foot !!(Just to add to everything else I have to deal with).

Surgery is out of the question for me at the moment as I have even read of back problems developing after the surgery due to the way you walk. However they say that the condition usually develops slowly and my GP says I can have injections when it starts to bother me to much.

I have no idea if it is in the family as I lost my Mum at the very young age of 53, and also my grandparents all died young, but I guess in my case it is just from the way I walk due to my back pain.
