Body Mass Index and low back pain: a connection!

Posted Jul 26 2010 5:45am

There are many causes of low back pain and body mass index or BMI has been found to be one. An April 2010 sudy from Norway showed a direct relationship between high BMI and low back pain.

Avoiding low back pain by keeping a healthy BMI means keeping our weight to a reasonable level. A BMI between 18 and 25 is considered normal with 25 to 30 being overweight and over 30 is considered obese. Of course under 18 is not healthy as many nutritional needs are not being met.

BMI is a calculation of height and weight which roughly determines the amount of fat our body has. In our office we acually calculate the % body fat as that is more accurate. Athletes such as body builders will have a high BMI because they are more “dense” due to high muscle mass and not necessarily fat.

If you are interested in finding out what your BMI or body fat is, our office provides complimentary analysis. Call 860-620-9523 or visit www.southingtonchiropractor.com.
