Bed rest for bad backs: Good or Bad

Posted Dec 01 2010 8:07am

Most people when their backs hurt want to lay down, take weight off, go to bed. But a recent study shows that that thinking is out dated and actually bad for recovery.

Normal daily activity and not bed rest seems to be the best way for patients with low back pain. Active patients experience less pain and avoid the side effects of immobility.

If you have back pain and no leg pain, staying active and avoiding bed rest has been proven to improve the condition. If you have back pain and leg pain there is no difference if you go to bed or stay active but considering that immobility makes the back pain worse, staying active is the way to go.

Of course the main challenge is to eliminated the back and or leg pain. Keeping movement is the key, especially in the small joints of the back. So Chiropractic care is the treatment of choice.
