Back Pain Survey Results are Depressing

Posted Jun 02 2009 4:34pm

SF Financial District Chiropractor comments more on Depression-Back Pain Connection :

Spine-health.com just conducted a survey of  back and neck pain victims to see what other health problems they suffer from  ( back and neck pain poll results ).  The results were surprising. Almost 60% of the participants report depression. This is very high. In fact, the Spine-health article, which is where I found this, reports that  " Estimates on prevalence of depression among the chronic pain population range from18 - 32%." BIG Difference. And, I don't think it gets enough attention. I also noticed 30% of the back and neck pain sufferers smoke. Seems high. I made the following comment to the blog post:

Very interesting. Surveys really put things into perspective. 60% is a big number. I notice 30% of the survey participants with back or neck pain have a smoking habit. I think the percentage of the general population that smoke in the US is around 21%. It's around 30% in the UK. Smoking is bad news. The American Lung Association says that smoking has been identified as the "most important source of preventable morbidity and premature mortality worldwide." Back pain patients that smoke find it much more difficult to get better.
