BACK PAIN AND SITTING...

Posted Aug 01 2011 4:29pm

In a recent edition of BackCare they have written an article on 'Can sitting too much kill you'. Well, I truly hope not as I do an awful lot of sitting.

Apparently according to a report in the 'Scientific' American Magazine, researchers have found that the person who sits more is at a higher risk of death than the person who sits less !

They say that you should try and exercise for one hour per day, but that leaves 15-16 hours where you are still probably sitting down.

The study of 17,000 Canadians examined the links between time spent sitting and mortality and discovered the relationship was independent of physical activity levels. It was also backed by findings from a similar study undertaken in Australia.

They suggest to key to avoid sitting for long periods is to take as many mini breaks as possible, like standing up and walking around ( I definitely do that). They say that people who take more frequent breaks during their time in the office or while watching tv are less likely to be obese and have better metabolic health.

However, they also said that 'simple walking at a leisurely pace may be enough to undo the metabolic damage associated with prolonged sitting'. Phew! Thank goodness for that.
