Childhood Obesity statistics

  • The risk for adult obesity. Over 70 percent of overweight adolescents will become overweight or obese adults.

Well...add back pain to the laundry list of illnesses that obesity brings with it. The #1 risk factor for chronic back pain (which is back pain that persists for longer than 90 days) is previous back pain. Children that are carrying too much weight have a much higher incidence of back pain, and since the cause (too much body weight) is persistent, it can set the stage for a lifetime of pain and discomfort (along with all the other health problems mentioned above).

So what is the cause of this childhood obesity epidemic and what can be done about it?

It's a combination of all the processed foods that kids eat along with the decrease in physical activity associated with the computer age and technological revolution.

Heck, just yesterday McDonald's Happy Meals were banned in Santa Clara County, CA . It's out of control.

If we think we have a Health Care Crises now...wait another 10 years.

The good news is, we know the cause...Poor nutrition and lack of exercise.

And we know the solution...Improve nutrition and activity levels in kids.

This is exactly what Michelle Obama has set out to do with her Let's Move initiative. Americas Move to Raise a Healthier Generation of Kids.

Let’s Move! has an ambitious but important goal: to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation.

Let’s Move will give parents the support they need, provide healthier food in schools, help our kids to be more physically active, and make healthy, affordable food available in every part of our country.

Join First Lady Michelle Obama, community leaders, teachers, doctors, nurses, moms and dads in a nationwide campaign to tackle the challenge of childhood obesity. Learn more , read the action plan , and join us in solving the problem within a generation.

My Take: I love what Michele Obama is doing, because what we are doing is not working. She is attacking the cause of the problem. She is smart enough to know that the answer is not a new diabetes drug, or a new gastric surgery.

If your kids have back pain, you can have them checked out by a chiropractor which will help reduce the likelihood of the back pain becoming chronic. Find a chiropractor that understands nutrition also (if there is a weight problem), because the only true solution for obesity is to lose the weight. The best resource I know of for nutrition is
