WOW, WOW, and WOW

Posted Jun 10 2009 12:18am

This week has been a total whirlwind. I am at the Autism One conference in Chicago. I am amazed. I am hopeful.

At the same time, I am so freaking FRUSTRATED with our lack of resources here in North Dakota. BUT - I don't plan on that being long. I don't plan on feeling sorry for my family and other ND families...because I am going to take my anger and use it...I am going to use it to make things happen up here in the Peace Garden State. Mark my words.

I will tell you a bit about what I have experienced so far...but keep in mind that I cannot begin to describe the sheer motivation and total empowerment that is present all around me. From the parents. I am surrounded by people that GET me and GET my family and GET our day-to-day struggles. We are fighting the same battle...we are winning the war.
It started with these magnificent women: Anna Sobaski (creator of Breads from Anna), Betsy Hicks, Sueson Vess, and Julie Matthews.

They presented "The Art of Cooking Special Diets." And believe me, it was a magnificent art! We laughed, we ate, and then we laughed and ate some more. It was all GFCF and it was delicious! With all of the information I got here...I think we're going to go to the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. From pecanbread.com:

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a scientific diet that is based on chemistry, biology, and clinical studies.

The selection of foods that are allowed on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet is based on the chemical structure of these foods. Carbohydrates are classified by their molecular structure. The allowed carbohydrates have a molecular structure that is small enough to be transported across the small intestinal surface into the bloodstream. These carbohydrates do not need to be broken down by various processes of the digestive organs such as the pancreas or the intestinal cells' surface enzymes.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is biologically correct because it is species appropriate. The allowed foods are those that early man ate before the agricultural revolution. The diet of early man is one of meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, nuts, low-sugar fruits, and certain oils. Starches, grains, pasta, legumes, and breads have only been consumed for a mere 10,000 years. Many people are not adapted to these types of foods yet.

Many of the families that I talked to that didn't have a lot of success with the GFCF diet had a significant amount of success with SCD. And it makes sense.

Moving on, the next day was the clinician's seminar. My brain still hurts. It was very informational, to say the least. I would love to get some of our pediatricians out there next time.

The next day, Jenny McCarthy presented - she was funny, and motivating, and UNCUT! She really doesn't hold back - which is such a great thing! I'm posting a video of her in the next entry...

And THEN, I got to meet her! I told her how limited our resources are up here, and that my personal goal was to get an autism clinic. "Thank God!" she replied. And Rogan - Jenny McCarthy said you were "BEAUTIFUL!" I will remember to tell that to your first girlfriend! :-)

It's now 9:30 pm and I am too pooped to tell you anymore. I was awake at 4:30 this morning...thinking about all the sh** that we need to do to "make things happen." And we had our first session at 7 am with the Polings (yes, Dr. Jon and Terry Poling, who won the federal vaccine court case)...they were amazing - they ARE amazing...I will tell you more tomorrow...
