Why are we having this for dinner again?

Tradition. Because we are Irish. Because your grandmother had other plans, so I am making it myself for the first time.

And when did SHE ever make this?

For St. Patrick's Day! Once a year!

Are you sure? I have never heard of this. I don't remember this.

Well, maybe she made it all the time when Grampy was alive. Whatever. MY grandmother made it every year. It is tradition! We are Irish! We will eat it even if we hate it.

I don't think I'm Irish.

Do not make me channel my dead grandmother, for she will slap your face and pinch and twist you. And besides, it's really great the next day on a sandwich with sauerkraut, thousand island dressing, Swiss cheese and rye bread...that's when we celebrate that hint of German I never talk about.
