On Thursday the boys had their first trip to the dentist. They both did so well. Keaton acted like it was no big deal. He stretched out and watched sponge bob while they worked on his teeth. Gavin was a little more nervous about them putting anything in his mouth. They ended up having to just use a regular toothbrush to brush his teeth because he didn’t like the vibration. The dental hygienist was so awesome with Gavin! She was able to get everything done, including x-rays, even though Gavin was not into it.
The Best news is that neither of the boys have any cavities! I felt like the best mom in the world. I thought for sure they had at least a couple. Gavin especially since he took a sippy cup of milk to bed with him until he was three (yeah bad mommy story right there). Oh, and we don’t do any fluoride with them other then what is in their toothpaste. I have to say that I owe a lot of their great dental hygiene to Xylitol. I buy the drops from Spry and give them to the boys in the morning and before bed. If you aren’t familiar with Xylitol its a natural sugar that has been found to inhibit plaque causing bacteria. Its awesome and apparently it works really well! I told the dentist we were using that instead of fluoride and he had never heard of it. Of course he told me I need to start using fluoride right away. I told him uh huh, but I have no plans to give them any.
I think my favorite part about the visit is when the dentist asked if Keaton was able to spit out toothpaste yet. I told him proudly that he does really well. The dentist seemed disappointed and then told me if he’s not swallowing a lot of it he will need to be on fluoride tablets. Lets see the kids aren’t supposed to swallow toothpaste because its full of chemicals right? That is why we give babies the baby toothpaste right? Yet he wants my kid to swallow it? What? I’m confused. I’m all about taking great care of your teeth (well maybe not mine as much, but its not my fault cause I have crack smoker teeth) but I am not cool with letting my kid swallow toothpaste. Does that seem weird to anyone else?
Anyway, here are a few pictures of the kids at the dentist!
