Speech Evaluation

Posted Jun 13 2009 12:18am
Nathan had his speech evaluation yesterday at ACES. This appointment was to evaluate him and then the Regional Center will decide if he will receive services or not.

He did great, charming is the best way to put the way he responded to this lady. He was funny. He has been to that room a few times and so he is familiar with the toys and just played happily as she asked me questions. I think she got him up to about an 18-21 months level which is a HUGE improvement. He struggles in some areas like using the first consonant sound in words. She said he is very intelligent and that will help and hinder him. It will help him in that he catches on to things SO quickly. The difficult part may be that he learns these words quickly and starts to put 3, 4 and 5 words together, but be hard to understand which will make him frustrated. She said she'd put in a good word for him, but that the stars have to align correctly with this Regional Center and you never know what they'll do. What else is new...

She is going to send some consonant vowel and consonant vowel consonant flash cards for us to use so that will be cool. It is interesting to me that the direction the speech pathologist is going is exactly where Bryanna has been going (she has been doing her homework). Yet ACES is doing a hodge podge random list of flash cards with random consonants and useless words. I mean, it will be helpful for him to know how to say leaf and dirt, but those words are not high on our list of importance and they will not give him a good foundation for talking. He needs to start at the basics with me, go, no, etc.. and then move on to consonant vowel consonant, like mom, dad, ball, dog, etc...

Hopefully ACES will take her suggestions and make a better language program for him. Better than that, pray he gets speech therapy time. This will be the second time it is recommened and we should be getting it. Another thing to pray for, this one is huge. Remember the christian speech therapist I told you about? She was working on getting vedored so that she can be used through the Regional Center. Pray that she has gotten this done and that the Regional Center will allow us to use her. She is a really nice lady and she would come to our home! I really feel like this is reaching and so I'm just going to pray, but if God does this, man oh man, that would be amazing!
