Pete Candela - Update

Posted Jun 13 2009 12:18am
Well, it's that time again! It's been about a year since we began our journey! We are meeting again with Pete Candela to see how Nathan has improved over the last year. It will be so interesting to see Nathan meet with him again, I can't wait! Tony and I had our initial parent meeting and went through the Vineland on Monday. It was a nice experience, I was frustrated with myself for not knowing answers to questions that I KNEW he was going to ask! Oh well.

Nathan also had another Rossetti evaluation at speech. She isn't finished with the report, but she told me that he was solid at a 24-27 month level and scattered up to 36 months. He is 33 months old, but he has made progress. I want a detour to get up to normal development and Tony is just happy there is steady progress and no decline. :) That's the typical outlook between us two!

I saw this on a graph at the verbal behavior conference. It showed a line for normal development and a line for delayed development and then a line that connected the two lines at an angle. That angled line was intensive therapy to catch them up. By my calculations we've only gained 2 months in speech and luckily I'm not smart enough to figure out how many years it will take to catch up if we continue at that rate! :)

Interesting note, interesting to me anyway. On Pete's bill under diagnosis he put 299.00 which is autism. Initially he had talked about 299.80 pervasive development disorder - not otherwise specified. Which if you ask me is just frustrating! When he was done with his report he put it at 299.00 because Nathan met the criteria for each of the 3 sections on the DSM IV. I didn't expect it to change or anything, it just makes it so real when I see the numbers on the paper!

I forgot and gave Nathan tea with caffeine at my moms house at dinner so he is up playing right now. His eyes are wide open and he is talking LOUDLY! :) At one point he said "Mommy, cooking!" "toast!" I think he is getting hungry from staying up so late! :)
