Parallel Universes: Flu Shots For Pregnant Women

Posted Sep 17 2010 12:00am

Fetus Exhibit One: "The American Medical Assn., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the March of Dimes  and seven other groups sent a letter to healthcare professionals Wednesday urging them to counsel pregnant patients to get a seasonal flu shot. ... Many women fear getting the vaccine because they think it might harm the fetus. But the organizations note that the vaccine had been given to millions of pregnant women over the last decade and had not been shown to harm either the women or their infants." -- Los Angeles Times, September 15, 2010.

Exhibit Two: Official product label, written by drug maker and approved by FDA, for Fluzone flu vaccine: "Safety and efficacy of Fluzone have not been established in pregnant women, nursing mothers, or children less than six months of age." (HERE) (All flu vaccines, thimerosal-containing or not, include this warning.)
