Late in 1962 and in early 1963 many different research groups in the USA and the Soviet Union demonstrated the most important Laser Diode. Since then, these tiny light-emitting semiconductor devices are getting an indispensible component of today’s technological infrastructure. Laser diodes are centrally critical to modern telecommunications, data storage, and computing, and find applications covering anything from medical imaging to barcode readers. The paper presents a simple and straightforward strategy of determining the phase of an interferogram by exploiting the targeted behavior of laser diodes—i. e., the small variation of the operating wavelength attainable by varying the forward current for the diode. The proposed procedure was developed by using a device diode for feeding a quasi-balanced Michelson Green Laser Pointers, that the optimal operating conditions were investigated—i. e., the proper unbalancing and therefore the proper variation of the supply voltage of the diode. The selected operating conditions were then intended for evaluating the phase-steps by a simple algorithm developed on purpose for those present application. The phase measurements carried out by the proposed method have shown an excellent accordance with those obtained by a conventional temporal phase-shifting procedure performed because of a high-end commercial PZT actuator with quasi- nanometric accuracy.
